   Grey Bruce Health Services

With miles of sandy shoreline, pristine water and wooded areas, the Bruce Peninsula is a virtual paradise, much of it within walking or cycling distance from work or home. In order to provide excellent medical care close to home for the approximately 170,000 residents, Grey Bruce Health Services runs one large secondary-level acuity hospital in Owen Sound, as well as five small rural hospitals in Lion’s Head, Wiarton, Southampton, Markdale and Meaford. The region attracts many tourists, retirees and seasonal residents, which means emergency room visits far outnumber what would be expected.

We have approximately 1,600 employees working at our six hospitals. Our employees are dedicated, compassionate and talented individuals who provide excellent care to our patients. Our Strategic Plan outlines our goals for ensuring that Grey Bruce Health Services is an employer of choice. We have a Quality of Work life committee whose mandate is to implement initiatives that help create a positive working environment and foster a culture of continuous learning.

As Maureen Solecki, President and CEO says, “If you are hoping to make a difference in the lives of your patients, consider a career with Grey Bruce Health Services. We have many job opportunities and our Hospitals are surrounded by the natural beauty of the Niagara Escarpment, Georgian Bay and Bruce Peninsula.”

Nurses at Grey Bruce Health Services like the close relationships with physicians. All of the rural hospitals have inpatient beds and busy ambulatory programs. They are active in the provision of a wide range of primary care services as well as general surgery, obstetrics and orthopedic surgery.

The Owen Sound site is the major provider of specialist care in the two counties. It runs an extensive mental health program and a very large range of ambulatory care, including dialysis, breast screening and rehab services. The surgery program includes General, Thoracic, Vascular, Urology, ENT, Orthopedic and Ophthalmology. There is a level-two neo-natal intensive care unit, a medical oncology program, an excellent rehabilitation program and restorative care unit.

Grey Bruce Health Services values and supports continuous improvement and achievements. In keeping with our strategic goals for our people we support a variety of opportunities for paid and unpaid student placements as well as job-shadowing.

Grey Bruce Health Services participates in the Nursing Graduate Guarantee program for new graduate nurses through the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. This program allows new grad nurses to gain the knowledge, skills and experience to competently care for their patients. New grad nurses are paired with an experienced nurse in a mentoring relationship. The Nursing Graduate Guarantee program is designed to support new graduate nurses in finding full time employment immediately upon graduation.

A comprehensive hospital orientation includes corporate, program and unit specific information and skills training. A combination of self-directed electronic, telemedicine, blended and classroom instruction strategies are utilized. There is a resource center for online searching and a Health Sciences Library. Nurses love their jobs here. They are friends as well as colleagues. Most nurses stay for years and are a source of wisdom for new nurses. Units and rural hospitals organize many local social events, but there are also corporate-wide social events that take place such as staff golf tournaments, curling bonspiels and staff BBQs. Another important event to look forward to is our Annual Recognition Event where employees are recognized for their years of service, educational achievements and outstanding team achievements.

Community support is so strong that the residents of Grey Bruce have raised several million dollars to purchase needed equipment for our hospitals. People love living here for the recreational opportunities and the active communities. It’s a place for scuba diving, sailing, snowmobiling, hiking, cross-country and downhill skiing. Grey Bruce is community living and community nursing at its best.
