Guelph General Hospital is a dynamic 165-bed acute care hospital that relies on teamwork to deliver quality patient-centred care. We embrace a shared decision making model of care as we know that our dedicated staff of over 1200, which includes 550 nurses, has much to offer with valuable insights and ideas.
We provide a full range of services to the 180,000 residents of Guelph and surrounding Wellington County. Our current services include emergency services, critical care, ambulatory care, general medicine, surgery, paediatrics, family birthing, and diagnostic (x-ray, ultrasound, CT and MRI) and laboratory services. Our current specialties include Vascular Surgery and a Bariatric Centre of Excellence.
Working as a Team
The hospital uses a shared decision-making model, ensuring an interdisciplinary approach to point-of-care decision-making within a professional practice model. Nurses provide input for support and departmental teams, professional practice, and a variety of committees.
Nurses are supported and encouraged to develop their professional portfolios, and to practice autonomously to the best of their ability within their scope of practice.
An extensive competency-based orientation is geared to nurses’ individual needs. During orientation, nurses are paired with an experienced preceptor, a nurse who spends time introducing the new employee to the hospital.
Nurses are encouraged to attend outside workshops and seminars as well as hospital in-services. An Education Assistance Program is available to provide tuition reimbursement as well as conference and workshop fees. To aid in both their studies and their health care work, nurses have access to a learning centre, which is overseen by a staff librarian and fully equipped with an up-to-date library, computer labs and Internet access.
Nursing practice is also supported through our Professional Practice Department. Clinical educators, clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners provide valuable support to our nursing staff. Nurses are also supported to develop and share their clinical expertise through participation in various specialty teams.
At Guelph General, nurses are able to provide quality patient care by utilizing health care technologies including on-line documentation, hospital-wide telemetry capability, electronic incident reporting, the latest IV and epidural pumps, an automated medication system and Picture Archival Computer System (PACS). Nurses are provided with a thorough computer orientation to introduce them to all hospital technologies.
Come to Work, Stay to Live
Guelph General works in partnership with the nurses’ union to work towards a high quality of working life. Nurses have flexible and multiple scheduling options, including 8 and 12-hour shifts, 2 day/2 night rotations and job sharing.
Guelph is a beautiful and vibrant city, a safe and close-knit community that offers many cultural, recreational and sporting activities.
