A Commitment to Education for Nurses

All new nursing staff is given extensive orientation as they begin their careers in one of the many areas of practice at LHSC. The length of orientation varies according to the individual needs of the new staff member, and to the requirements of the clinical area in which he or she will be working. In addition, all new Nurses take part in preceptorship programs, and have educators who can offer further support and professional development to new staff members at LHSC. 

We also encourage our nursing professionals to continue their learning through formal study, such as post-RN and Masters Degree programs. Funding support opportunities and bursaries are available to eligible applicants. Clinical educators organize on-site programs and technology training updates. They also give guidance in choosing off-site certification and degree qualifications. There are opportunities to keep up to date through conferences, workshops and one-on-one support.

More than 50 educational institutions have affiliations with LHSC, including The University of Western Ontario and Fanshawe College located right here in London. More than 1,400 nursing, allied health and general students in undergraduate and post-graduate programs study each year with expert staff at LHSC. We are also an integral partner in UWO’s medical education program.

A Shared Leadership Model

As part of LHSC’s commitment to shared leadership, nurses have a voice through the Nursing Professional Practice Council (NPPC), on which nurses across the organization collaborate in order to enhance patient and family care through the use of evidence-based practice. This council also works to continually enhance the quality of work life for nurses at LHSC.

Through our collaborative practice model and Nursing Professional Practice Council, our nurses are partners on interdisciplinary teams and play an active role in our shared leadership model.
