   Niagara Health System

The Niagara Health System offers an opportunity to be part of a changing, evolving environment while promoting nursing excellence, quality patient-centered care and high professional standards. The Niagara Health System (NHS) is Ontario’s largest multi-site hospital amalgamation comprised of six sites serving 434,000 residents across the 12 municipalities making up the Regional Municipality of Niagara. More than 4,300 staff at NHS serve residents in a variety of settings, including full service acute care, community hospital care, primary care, transitional care and rehabilitation and outpatient assessment and treatment. It is precisely this wide variety of environments that provides nurses with the unique opportunity to pursue their goals in a care setting that suits their individual needs.

Nursing

A Nursing Strategic Plan - A Blueprint for Nursing has been developed by nursing leaders throughout the NHS by building on our core values of Compassion, Professionalism and Respect, which embrace our five success factors: focus on those we serve; bring out the best in each other; build strong, successful relationships; create a better way; and use our resources wisely.

Our nursing vision is clear: Inspiring leadership and excellence in nursing through living the values and sharing the knowledge. Prepared for the present challenging the future. “Nursing within the NHS continually strives to provide, safe, competent and high quality patient/centered care in an environment where excellence in nursing practice is valued and respected.”

In collaboration with our Quality of Worklife department we are committed to providing a healthy workplace to fulfill our goal of becoming the health care provider of choice.

Interprofessional Mentorship Program

At this time, there are only a few established mentorship programs in place in Ontario, and we are building on their The success of the partnership is demonstrated by the record number of successful RNAO Advanced Clinical Fellowships the NHS has received. The Registered Practical Nurses Association of Ontario (RPNAO) has also recognized the NHS commitment to nursing by awarding two RPNAO Nursing Fellowships. Reinforcing the current focus on patient safety, the NHS is actively engaged in research with Safer Healthcare Now.

Advancing Professional Practice

The number of Nurse Practitioner - Extended Class opportunities continues to increase, with eight positions in the areas of Addiction Services, Ambulatory/Paediatrics, Primary Health Care, Cardiac and Stroke Care. The NHS has also provided clinical placements for student NPs in a wider variety of areas, including Emergency.

Nursing Educational Opportunities

The NHS demonstrates its commitment to education for nurses through the strong ties established with local colleges and universities, as well as initiatives such as the Critical Care and Operating Room Internship Programs - part of the comprehensive nurse recruitment, training and retention plan. NHS offers nurses the opportunity to make a real difference in the evolution of health care in Niagara, and the region itself offers one of the most diverse and breathtaking landscapes in the world. experience to offer a high-quality program from which our nursing staff will benefit. Enhancing our success, nursing staff can participate in the Ontario Hospital Association Pilot Mentorship Program that supports experienced nurses mentoring new recruits, or those returning from leaves.

Professional Practice Development

The Nursing Professional Practice Advisory Council was created out of a successful Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) Advanced Leadership Fellowship Initiative and serves to improve patient outcomes through:

  • Supporting leadership and excellence in professional nursing practice
  • Reviewing, interpreting and disseminating evidenced based information to enhance professional nursing practices

The Council is co-chaired by an RN and RPN to truly reflect the College of Nurses of Ontario’s expectation of collaborative nursing practice as described in “RNs and RPNs - Working Together.” The Nursing Professional Development Council is a joint committee between the hospital and the Ontario Nurses’ Association. The committee’s purpose is to assist the NHS in supporting professional accountability, continuous learning and enhanced opportunities for career development.
