Nursing at Ontario Shores

At Ontario Shores, specialized recovery-focused programs and services are designed to provide successful treatment as interprofessional mental health care teams work with patients and families throughout their journeys of recovery. Assessment and crisis services are provided, as well as consultation, and education. Ontario Shores staff are committed to providing excellent patient care, ongoing learning, and maintaining a safe, respectful and positive environment.

Nursing at Ontario Shores plays an integral role in the excellent level of care provided and achieving our vision of Recovering Best Health, Nurturing Hope and Inspiring Discovery by maintaining a culture of excellence, innovation, safety, respect, and community.

Ontario Shores employs more than 500 nurses. We recognize psychiatric-mental health nursing as a specialized domain of nursing practice, education and research, with the therapeutic nurse-patient relationship as the core component.

As an integral component of the interprofessional team, nurses at Ontario Shores practice within the Collaborative Recovery Model to promote hope, autonomy, self-determination and patient participation in the care provided. Working in partnership with patients, their families, other community hospitals and social service agencies, our nurses are guided by the principle that recovery is an individual process where patient autonomy is supported and is built on a foundation of interprofessional collaboration.

A Diversity of Work Experiences

Ontario Shores offers a broad range of specialized inpatient and outpatient services through the following clinical programs: Adolescent and Young Adults/ Dual Diagnosis; Forensics; Assessment and Reintegration; Geriatric and Neuropsychiatry Program; Outpatient Services and Integrated Health Services.

Nurses collaborate with patients and their families and work in partnership with the interprofessional team to develop individualized treatment plans. The goal of Nursing is to work with patients to help them achieve their health objectives and regain their independence: the focus of care is a strength-based recovery model, and includes value identification, collaborative visioning, goal striving, action planning and monitoring.

Professional Development at Ontario Shores

Ontario Shores provides ongoing opportunities for nurses to enhance their knowledge, skills and expertise through onsite learning initiatives such as:

  • professional development workshops and events held in our conference centre
  • access to our professional development fund to pursue post-secondary courses related to their practice and to participate in industry conferences
  • opportunities to act as preceptors to undergraduate nursing students, helping them develop their leadership skills and stay current in the field
  • an exciting opportunity for new graduates to apply for our Nursing Residency Program, which allows participants to move from their current stage of competency to a more advanced level

Our Nursing Professional Practice strategic plan will develop and support nursing at Ontario Shores to promote our vision to become “Leaders in Mental Health Nursing. Making a Difference…Illuminating Hope.” This plan is focused on interprofessional recovery-oriented care, leadership and partnership, research, education, safety, professional practice, capacity and resources.
