Caring for patients at critical times, conducting leading-edge research, teaching the latest advances in health care, and our affiliation with the University of Toronto, all distinguish Sunnybrook as one of Canada’s premier academic health sciences centres.
Sunnybrook nurses provide expert care for patients in their time of greatest need: from premature newborns, to those requiring critical care, specialized trauma, musculoskeletal, oncology, mental health, dementia, cardiac or stroke care, to the elderly war veterans living at Sunnybrook.
Sunnybrook has an extraordinary team of healthcare professionals who respond to society’s most devastating illnesses, provide care for the healthcare system’s most complex cases and work to improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of people each year.
An Academic Leader in Nursing
Sunnybrook is dedicated to academic excellence in nursing, as well as to high-quality, patient-focused care. Nurses report that practicing at Sunnybrook is meaningful and satisfying. Nurses have developed a culture of excellence and compassion, innovation and change, respect and integrity. Reflective practice and quality improvement are important aspects of daily care.
Nurses have access to innovative education through e-learning modules, classroom, lab and unit based sessions provided by our highly qualified team of nursing leaders. Sunnybrook managers encourage professional development and provide work schedules that accommodate school schedules, funding and guidance on educational courses. Nurses are sponsored in specialty education programs through tuition, bursary and conference fund support, and many are supported to attend university programs with nursing education bursaries.
Sunnybrook is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and many other academic organizations. Community colleges and universities hold courses on our premises and more than 700 nursing students each year gain experience here. Some students come from around the world to gain experience at Sunnybrook. Several of our nurses hold cross-appointments with our academic partners, and the majority of our staff support student learning through formalized preceptorship arrangements with the schools.
As a centre of research and innovation, Sunnybrook supports its nurses to participate in activities directed toward generation of new knowledge and knowledge transfer through internal research funding mechanisms, a focus on best practice implementation, and a strong culture of questioning and discovery. Supports are available to assist nurses to formulate research and knowledge transfer questions and develop projects.
Nursing Graduate Guarantee Initiative
Sunnybrook is an active participant in the province’s Nursing Graduate Guarantee Initiative, offering nursing graduates across Ontario exciting opportunities to learn and grow while securing them full time employment.
In the spring of 2007, the Ministry created an on-line job portal that is a meeting place for employers and new Ontario nursing graduates. To date, Sunnybrook has posted over 150 full-time jobs on the HealthForceOntario Jobs portal, including postings for both Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses.
The Initiative assists graduates in gaining full-time experience, eases their transition into the workforce and helps to ensure new nurses are comfortable working in their unit, with colleagues, physicians, and allied health professionals.
Through the program, Sunnybrook is able to provide each new graduate nurse hired with an extensive orientation program. Nurses have opportunities to work with, and are supported on the units by, Masters-trained advanced practice nurses, nurse educators and clinical nurse specialists/nurse practitioners.
Advance Your Nursing Career
Nurses influence policy and program development, and play a leadership role in implementing practice and professional standards, through a fully integrated shared governance model that includes unit-based and corporate nursing councils. There are numerous opportunities to advance in practice, education, management and research positions. Innovations provide growth and learning through the arts and technology. Monthly rounds provide for the exchange of ideas, and nurses have opportunities to be mentored in research, and to present and publish papers.
Quality of working life is a focus for nurses at Sunnybrook. For example, the Redelmeier Nursing Education Centre, comprised of a 24/7 Nursing Computer Resource room, two Nursing Skills Labs, a Nursing classroom, and workout facilities are available onsite at the Bayview campus.
Nurses who work at Sunnybrook can expect to be excited about nursing practice, encouraged with their career options and satisfied with their contributions to quality of life for patients and families. Sunnybrook is a dynamic institution that values nursing staff and their important place in health care.
