At Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre (SLMHC), we achieve a high standard in health care which benefits the north-western communities we serve, as well as our exceptional nurses tending to their needs. MenoYa Win in Oji-Cree language means health, wellness and well-being, principles that represent our holistic and innovative approach in health care. Through our partnerships and our new and expanding services, we value different pathways to good health.
Meno Ya Win Health Centre serves the flourishing community of Sioux Lookout as well as more than 20,000 First Nations people from the surrounding area. Currently, under one administration we employ nearly 400 people including RPN’s and RN’s dedicated to excellence in care and career development. We tend to the healthcare needs of people in the Nishnawbe-Aski communities north of Sioux Lookout, the Treaty #3 community of Lac Seul First Nation, and residents of Pickle Lake and Savant Lake. Annually, we serve approximately 30,000 outpatients.
Through the amalgamation of two hospitals in 2002, health services at our facility were greatly enhanced and continue to evolve. SLMHC is a combined 60-bed, acute care regional hospital and a 20-bed Extended Care facility. We also run a compassionate Community Counseling and Addiction Services Program, an Assault Care and Treatment Program and a Traditional Healing, Medicine, Foods and Support Program.

From orientation onward, nurses have access to a continuing learning process. Our new nurses are teamed with a preceptor beginning with four-shift rotations. As they become familiar with the facilities and services, their shifts increase according to their level of applied knowledge and comfort. Nurses here will find that our close-knit hospital environment fosters a spirit of teamwork. Our hospital thrives because the majority of the people we serve come from First Nations communities, so our entire staff is open to working with and learning from different cultures. Hospital interpreter services are available 24 hours to facilitate a quality provision of care. We also offer the Inter-professional Care Program, a two-day mandatory training workshop on cross-cultural relations.
Career advancement
As SLMHC prepares for its transition, nurses looking to sharpen their leadership skills are always welcomed. We offer opportunities for qualified nurses to show initiative and contribute in the development of effective policies and procedures. Nurses can also advance in their careers to an available management position, as a team leader, a discharge planner or a clinical nursing coordinator. Our professional practice leader ensures education opportunities are readily accessible to all our nurses through workshops, access to annual conferences and funding support for educational courses that will help upgrade their skills.

Education
SLMHC participates in the Nursing Graduate Guarantee Initiative set up by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Together, we ensure nursing graduates gain on-the-job experience with the completion of a six month placement program which converts to full-time employment as positions become available.
Hub of the North living
Situated among a system of lakes stemming from the English River, Sioux Lookout gleans the best of nature among vibrant communities. Recreational activities throughout the year are plentiful with many opportunities for fishing, camping, swimming, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, exercising outdoors, or simply enjoying fresh air. When it comes to family living, there’s no looking further than Sioux Lookout.

| We are more than a hospital!
The Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre is an innovative and growing hospital which opened the doors to a brand new, 140,000 square-foot facility in November, 2010. This state of the art building has increased access to health care for all the residents of Sioux Lookout, its surrounding communities and 28 First Nations communities. This project stems from a Four-Party Agreement between the First Nations, federal, provincial and municipal governments. Within our new facility we continue our tradition of innovation and commitment to being a Centre of Excellence in providing acute, long term care, ambulatory care, mental health and addition services, and community-based services. New services include:
- A five bed Withdrawal Management Unit
- A dedicated palliative care area
- An expanded chronic kidney disease program with two additional dialysis stations
- Centre for Complex Diabetes Care
- CT and diagnostic mammography
